How do you apply it in practice?
Diagnostic order: sitemap submitted? → blocked by robots.txt? → has noindex? → replaced by canonical? → content too thin so it falls into 'Discovered – currently not indexed'?
Why does it matter for AI search citations?
Generative search engines tend to extract sentences that are clearly defined, consistent and quotable on their own. Writing concepts like "Indexation" as one consistent definition across your site, backed by structured data and verifiable sources, lowers the chance of being misread. This improves readiness only; it does not guarantee citations or ranking gains — measure actual citations to know.
Which related terms should you know?
IndexNow
IndexNow is an open protocol from Bing and Yandex that lets sites POST a list of changed URLs to search engines for near-instant crawling. Google does not yet participate, but Cloudflare, Wix, Yoast, and others have integrated it natively.
Sitemap.xml
Sitemap.xml is the standard format for submitting URL lists to search engines, with lastmod / changefreq / priority per entry. It doesn't guarantee indexing but accelerates discovery, especially for new sites, weakly-linked pages, and freshly published content.
Canonical Tag
A canonical tag uses <link rel="canonical" href="..."> to tell search engines which URL is preferred among a group of similar pages, consolidating ranking signals and avoiding duplicate-content dilution. Common for multilingual sites, parameterized URLs, and AMP mirrors.
